Los Reyes Canyons is located in the City of Helotes, Texas just outside of northwest San Antonio. Our community rests in the wooded hill country bordered between Government Canyons State Park to the west, Highway 16 to the East and touching two residential subdivisions to the North and South of us. We are within a few miles of San Antonio and major highway access, convenient to USAA, Medical Center, Fiesta Texas, Sea World, and La Cantera Shopping.
Our gated single family residential community is accessed from Hwy 16. Near the entrance, our historic bridge allows you to leave the city behind and enter the 1-5 acre home sites in the tranquil country retreat with hill top views, dense forest, and abundant wildlife.
The community was established and developed by Mr. Tom Dreiss and Mr. Weldon Buell under the name of Los Reyes, Inc. Their vision was to keep the charm of the country as they developed the neighborhood and took extra care to preserve the natural environment. They placed utilities underground and winding streets to allow for a more pleasing aesthetics. Los Reyes, Inc. established an HOA with covenant restrictions to help maintain this vision. The first homes began to appear in 1997 with the development of four units that consisted of 27 lots. The streets, Reyes Bluff, Reyes Ridge, the beginning of Reyes Canyon and Chinquapin, began to take shape. By December of 1997 there were 14 homes built. A few years later, the developers opened up a newer section completing Reyes Canyon, continuing Chinquapin, and adding Escarpment and a portion of Revello. The most recent Phase was the completion of the street, Revello, adding 27 lots and 73 acres to complete the planned community for a current total of 381.8 acres and 209 custom homes.
The community was in Bexar County during the early stages of development and in the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) of San Antonio. That changed in 2009 when the Board of Directors and homeowners petitioned to have Los Reyes Canyons community released from the ETJ of San Antonio. They subsequently requested and received approval from Helotes to become part of their city.
Los Reyes Canyons community has an active Homeowners Association and is governed by a seven -member Board of Directors who are elected to serve a one, two, or a three-year term. Our HOA has restrictive covenants which require our Master Design Committee to review and approve building site plans and landscape plans prior to construction.
The bridge structure was first built as part of the World’s Fair held in San Antonio in 1968. HemisFair ’68 was the official 1968 World’s Fair (or International Exposition) held on April 6 through October 6, 1968. The theme of the fair was “The Confluence of Civilizations in the Americas”, celebrating the many nations which settled the region. The fair was held to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the founding of San Antonio in 1718. More than thirty nations and fifteen corporations hosted pavilions at the fair. In 1986, many unused remaining structures built for the fair were removed-and with the foresight of our developer, Tom Dreiss, the bridge was repurposed to our community.

By Los Reyes BOD
Los Reyes Canyons Residents,
We are The Los Reyes Canyons Homeowners Association Board of Directors. Along with your quarterly dues billing, the BOD tries to pass along information updates that may be of interest to all residents. If you have questions that you would like addressed, please contact Spectrum or any of the Board Members. Details and contact information at www.lrchoa.com
What’s happening in our community?
Security Opinion Survey
The BOD is reviewing the results for the Security Opinion Survey and will update everyone to these results shortly.
Cul-De-Sacs
We are improving and beautifying our second mailbox areas beginning this month.
Revello Court Barrier
The BOD has constructed a barrier between LRC and Lago Vista to prevent vehicles from entering from the Lago Vista Community. The key to open this barrier will be managed by the Helotes Fire Department. For any additional information, please contact Linda Pelton, VP LRC HOA.
Adoption of islands – Residents that live along islands may wish to band together and “adopt” an island for landscape purposes. One or more islands are being maintained in this fashion to date. If you or your neighbors would like to adopt an island adjacent to your home, please let your BOD know. Gina O'may has adopted the Revello Drive/Revello Court Cul-de-sac in Honor of Mark O'may.
Entry Gates
Our entry gate keypad is getting an upgrade to the latest technology. Many LRC residents have experienced difficulties with our keypad, so the time is now to make an improvement. We have cameras placed strategically to visually identify mechanical errors and malfunctions of both the entry and exit gates from a remote location. The gates’ primary purpose is for security in LRC. Please remember to guard your gate codes from misuse. Please continue to report any concerns about our gates to Spectrum or any BOD Member if necessary.
Security Cameras
As we all know, crime is increasing in Helotes, and the need to record activity at our front gates is extremely important. We are upgrading our camera systems again to include “Wired” and “Wireless” State-of-the-Art DVR and Cloud System High Resolution Recording. Our Broadband Router was also upgraded to handle the larger network bandwidth. Our Security Cameras capture entry and exit gate activity, walk-in gate activity, and to view / record full 1080P resolution. We also have two very high low light resolution License Plate Capture Technology for those special violators. Do not "tap" the entry gate with your vehicles. Damages will be charged to the plate number associated with the vandalism violation and will be sent to Helotes Police Department immediately as a criminal offense.

MDC Approval
Remember to get our MDC's approval on improvements to your properties. We have a new team of MDC Members who are willing to work with you on your future projects and improvements.
Violations
Parked Cars on the Street, Trailers, Jet Skis, RV's and anything listed in our DCC&R's will be brought to your attention if you are in violation. Please respect our covenants in our community. When you purchased your home in LRC, you agreed to the details and rules of our community. Our Spectrum Site Driver is in our area quite often looking for violations. Please know that your Board of Directors are here to keep our community clean as well as keeping you informed and above all...safe.
Traffic Rules
Respect others while driving in our community. Speeding, ignoring stop signs, texting while driving, and traveling left when our road signs clearly say to keep right, can cause an accident to happen. Please be respectful while driving in our community.
Keeping the community informed
Our LRC BOD is going paperless and online. In the past, almost every piece of information was printed and mailed to you through the US Post Office. The cost of printing, labeling, and stamps, have been costly in the past. In 2023, the world has Email, E-Blasts, Websites, Facebook, Zoom, and now the newest LRC Emergency Text Blasting. Cell phones these days have the ability to send and receive information fast and efficiently, and at almost zero cost. Starting this year, all LRC Newsletters will be E-Blasted to your Email Addresses on file and displayed on our LRC Website and our "Private" community Facebook Page. Also, due to the high cost and low attendance of in-person meetings, Zoom Videoconferencing will be the chosen way of communicating for our LRC BOD Meetings. Again, Cell Phones, Computers, Tablets, and Laptops are very capable of handling our LRC Official Communications. Some BOD meetings will be "In-Person" or in a "Hybrid" meeting environment with Boards members present, or in a video-conference session.
Firewise Announcement from Peter Pelton
Recent events in California serve to remind us that we need to be vigilant in protecting our neighborhood from wildfire. Firewise USA has some suggestions as to how we can reduce wildfire risk:
Here are the two most important areas where we can reduce the risk:
The immediate zone (within 5 feet of the house)
Clean roofs and gutters of debris, pine needles and leaves’
Replace or repair and loose or missing shingles or roof tiles
Make sure that roof and attic vents are screened with 1/8 inch metal screen. Move any flammable materials away from wall exteriors: mulch, flammable plants, firewood, etc.
Remove anything flammable stored under decks or porches.
The Intermediate zone (5 to 30 feet from the exterior of the home)
Create fuel breaks with driveways, walkways, patios and decks
Keep lawns and native grasses mowed to a height of four inches
Remove ladder fuels (vegetation under trees) so a surface fire cannot reach the crowns. Prune trees up to six feet from the ground. For shorter trees don’t trim more than 1/3 of the overall height.
Space trees to have a minimum of eighteen feet between crowns.
Trees should be placed so that the mature canopy is no closer than 10 feet to the edge of the structure.
Clearly, the immediate zone is the first priority in protecting our homes, but the closer we can get to achieving the intermediate zone recommendations, the safer we’ll be.
President's Corner
Perimeter Gates and Fences are allowed in LRC
TPC 209.007 allows:
1) Texas Homeowners to construct a perimeter fence around their property for added security (front, sides, and/or back of homeowner’s property). This perimeter fence also includes the construction of an automatic gate (sliding or pivoting gate) at the driveway to gain entry to your property. The law states explicitly that the HOAs cannot restrict a new fence or gate around a homeowner’s front yard or driveway. LRC's MDC Master Design Committee is a structured committee within the Los Reyes Canyons Home Owners Association.
Homeowners associations will be permitted to enforce covenants that mandate the type of fence material used. Stated in the LRC HOA covenants, Document # 20210302929 10/29/2021, homeowners will be required to obtain prior approval for the material of any new fence being built, just not the fence itself. LRC's MDC Master Design Committee currently has a 90 day period to respond to your request, for either an acceptance or a denial...so put your requests in early if you desire personal security and privacy on your property here in LRC. There is no deposit required for the construction of this perimeter fence and gate by the HOA. Please contact Lester Sump, our Community Manager at lsump@spectrumam.com to get more information from our LRC HOA Security Measures Policy Document # 20210302929 for Construction Specifications.
2) In the event of a "denial" for any improvement request to the Los Reyes Canyons MDC Master Design Committee, Texas Law permits you to appeal any denial and request a hearing to discuss and potentially "override" an MDC decision by Texas Senate Bill 1588 Section 18. An owner has 30 days to appeal the MDC decision, and the BOD has 30 days to hold the hearing. The BOD may affirm or reverse the MDC's decision.
